The Social Groups of New France

There were three major social groups in New France:

  • Nobility or the colonial elite which included army officers, upper clergy and administrators.

  • Middle class or bourgeoisie which included merchants and civil servants.

  • Common People which included the habitants, parish priests, coureurs-des-bois, and tradesmen.
